Marimo moss balls are round, velvety, and delightfully quirky. Shrimp seem to adore them, and they add instant character to a tank. Here is what to know about these fuzzy green orbs and how to keep them happy.
What a Marimo Actually Is
A marimo is a spherical colony of a filamentous green alga called cladophora. It grows slowly in lakes in cool climates, rolling gently in the current to stay round. In an aquarium, it is a hardy, low-maintenance addition.
How Shrimp Use Them
Shrimp climb all over marimo balls, picking at tiny bits of debris trapped in the filaments. The surface also collects biofilm, so it works as both a playground and a snack bar. Watching a group of shrimp inspecting a moss ball is surprisingly entertaining.
Basic Care
Marimo prefer cooler water, soft light, and gentle movement. Avoid strong, direct light, which can turn them brown or cause algae to take over. Rolling the ball between your fingers every couple of weeks helps it stay round and lets all sides receive some light.
Cleaning and Refreshing
If debris collects, swirl the ball gently in a cup of old tank water and squeeze lightly to release dirt. Use tank water instead of tap water, so you do not shock the algae or remove helpful bacteria. Do not scrub or use soap.
Troubleshooting Brown or Flat Spots
A brown patch can mean too much light or too much sitting in one position. Rotate the ball and move it to a shadier spot. If a piece breaks apart, you can gently roll the fragments into a small ball again.
A Word on Sourcing
Choose marimo from a trusted source and rinse them well before adding them to the tank. Quarantine new additions briefly if you can, to watch for any hitchhikers. Healthy balls are firm, bright green, and springy.
Marimo and Water Quality
Marimo are light feeders on the nutrients in your water, and they tolerate a wide range of conditions. They are not a replacement for filtration, but they add a little natural polish. If the water gets very warm or nutrient-rich, check them often, because they prefer cooler, cleaner conditions.
